He is also the stepfather of Brian Jones and Linda Lawrences son, Julian Jones, also known as Julian Brian (Jones) Leitch. Give the guy a break and just dont scrutinize one of his songs. Has some of his better known tracks though, like Happiness Runs and Atlantis. She takes you gently by the hand, and leads you through the woods. The continent of Atlantis was an island. The farther you walk, the louder you can hear the unmistakable crash of cascading water. You can just barely hear her speak-singing something about the Twelve:.the Poet, the Physician, the Farmer, the Scientist, the Magician and the other so-called gods of our legends. You follow her out of the woods and find yourselves at the top of a massive, gorgeous forest waterfall. She stops only momentarily before wading out towards the crest. As she speaks, you notice that her voice is as gentle as ever, and you can hear it clearly and crisply over the mighty, but welcoming roar of the falls. She says, As the elders of our time choose to remain blind, let us rejoice, and let us sing and dance, and ring in the new. She stands at the edge, looking down at the clear, blue pool below. She looks at you, smiles, and--Hail Atlantis she yells and jumps, disappearing from view Suddenly, as the sun sheds the horizon completely, you hear the entire natural world in all its musical glory and harmony: Way dooooown below the ocean I wanna see you someday You can still hear her voice, as calming as ever. My antediluvian baby, oh, tell me where shes gone. Goo goo goo goo barabajagal is certainly not the lyrical highlight of Donovans illustrious career. In fact, by the time Barabajagal would be released in 1969, Donovan, much like Bob Dylan (to whom he could never escape comparison), had begun focusing more on musical expression than pleasing people with the sort of lyrics they wanted to hear and expected from folk artists. To Donovans (and Bob Dylans) benefit, the two went in very different directions when they both took up more introspective and independent songwriting techniques. He pursued and often utilized Eastern musical influences in his music, and fully embraced both the heaviest psychedelia and mellowest sunshine pop. Donovans best music, arguably, came after his folk days, but I think its safe to say that his best days as a lyricist were earlier in his career. On Barabajagal, Donovan teams up with the psychedelicblues-rock outfit, The Jeff Beck Group, known mostly for their resident guitar virtuoso and namesake, Jeff Beck, who rose to fame mostly as the lead guitarist for the Yardbirds. ![]() The songs begins with a nasty blues riff--no doubt Jeff Beck--and is quickly joined by some wicked piano rolling and a truly unique drum beat. Donovans lyrics are a bit silly, but the fantastic climax is the surprisingly poetic spoken-word bridge: Love is hot Love is hot TRUTH IS MOLTEN Superlungs is another hard-rocking psychedelic number, again, featuring some head-scratching lyrics, and maybe more shockingly (or not, after Mellow Yellow), some classic allusions to hebephilia. Musically, it is a wonderful song, however, with its echo-ey vocals and descending chorus giving it the same trippy brilliance of Gift From a Flower to a Garden. Where Is She and Happiness Runs find Donovan, to some extent, leaning back on his folk upbringing, but, particularly with Happiness Runs, just enough originality is pinched in to make it delightful. But Happiness Runs with its singalong vocal rounds and lovely lyric, is one of the albums best songs. Then there is I Love My Shirt, which is one of the silliest songs youll ever hear, but after seeing Donovan perform it with Dick and Tommy Smothers, I love it.
